How does the parish announcements calendar work?
The parish announcements calendar allows you to add the latest parish announcements directly to your personal calendar. By subscribing to the calendar, you can also follow announcements published or updated later, while the download option allows you to save the current calendar.
Subscribing creates an internet calendar subscription. Parish announcements are displayed in your own calendar application, where announcements published or updated later can also be followed. This option is primarily intended for calendar applications that support subscriptions to internet calendars.
This option copies the web address of the parish announcements calendar in .ics format to your clipboard. The copied URL can then be entered into a calendar application or service that supports subscriptions to internet calendars. This means that you do not have to update the calendar manually whenever an announcement changes.
Do not open the URL in your browser as an ordinary web page. Instead, paste it into the appropriate field of the calendar service where internet or subscribed calendars can be added.
On iPhone and iPad, the .ics calendar can be added to Apple Calendar as a subscribed calendar. You can start the process directly using the “Subscribe” option, or enter the copied calendar URL manually in the calendar settings.
On Android devices, .ics calendar subscriptions are not supported at system level. For this reason, the method described above cannot be used in the same way as on iPhone.
On a desktop computer, the .ics calendar can be used with a number of commonly used calendar applications and services. The internet calendar can be added to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook using its URL.
In Google Calendar, you can subscribe to the internet calendar using the copied .ics URL. Google provides a dedicated option for this when adding a calendar: Add a calendar by URL in Google Calendar.
Apple Calendar also allows you to subscribe to an internet calendar using its URL. Outlook and other applications that support internet calendars may likewise allow an .ics URL to be added.
The exact menu options and their names may vary between applications. In general, look for an option to add an internet or subscribed calendar, or to add a calendar by URL.
The copied URL should not be opened in your browser as an ordinary web page. Paste it into the appropriate field of the calendar application you are using.
A subscription connects your calendar to an internet calendar. Its contents can be updated later, making this the preferred option when you want to keep parish announcements up to date.
Downloading the .ics file, on the other hand, saves a file to your computer or device. You can then import it into a compatible calendar application.
When you want to automatically follow new or updated announcements, subscribing is the appropriate option.
A subscribed announcements calendar may receive new or modified entries when the calendar service performs its next update. The advantage of subscribing is that you do not need to download a new .ics file whenever an announcement is added or changed.
The exact update time depends on how frequently the calendar application you use checks the subscribed calendar.
The RSS feed allows you to follow newly published parish announcements through an RSS reader or another service that supports RSS. This provides an additional way to keep up with new announcements without having to visit the parish website each time.
