Parish Community Life
The life of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Parish includes communal prayer, service in the liturgy, and practical care for one another. A parish community becomes truly active when its members contribute their time and abilities and take part in the life of the parish.
Readers, altar servers, and the Rosary Society each serve the community in their own way. Discover the groups within our parish and the ministries and services in which you can take part.
Ministry and Community
Parish life is supported by many forms of service that complement one another. Some parishioners serve during the liturgy, others assist at the altar, while others contribute through communal prayer.
These ministries give people of different ages and circumstances the opportunity to take an active part in the life of the parish community.
Szent Korona Choir
Founded in 1997, the Szent Korona Choir is dedicated to the tradition of Musica Sacra. Through its liturgical ministry and sacred music programmes, the choir contributes to the musical life of the parish and the wider community.
Its repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant through Renaissance and Baroque sacred music to Romantic and contemporary Hungarian church music. Alongside its liturgical service in Balog nad Ipľom, the choir also represents the town’s religious and cultural heritage at performances in Hungary, Slovakia, and abroad.
Rosary Society
The Rosary Society brings parishioners together in prayer. Praying the Rosary is centred on meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s life and can form an important part of both communal and personal prayer.
According to the parish’s current information, members pray together, and the Rosary is part of the devotional life of the local Catholic community.
Altar Servers
Altar servers assist at the altar and help ensure the orderly celebration of Holy Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Their ministry requires familiarity with the order of the liturgy, attentiveness, and cooperation.
Serving at the altar offers children and young people an opportunity to become involved in the liturgical life of the parish from an early age. The parish presents altar servers as an important part of its community life.
Lectors
Lectors serve the gathered community by proclaiming the Word of God during the liturgy. This ministry calls for familiarity with the biblical text, clear proclamation, and attentive participation appropriate to the liturgical celebration.
The ministry of lector is one of the ways in which lay members of the faithful can take an active role in the liturgy. The parish lectors serve during the celebration of Holy Mass.
Serving at Holy Mass
Holy Mass is a communal celebration in which the faithful take part in different ways. The ministry of lectors and altar servers has a visible place within the liturgical celebration, while the entire congregation participates together in prayer. Serving in this way is not a matter of personal performance, but of assisting the community in celebrating the liturgy. By taking on such a ministry, each person helps ensure that Holy Mass is celebrated with dignity and in good order.
The Word of God and Ministry
The lector serves during the Liturgy of the Word by proclaiming the appointed biblical readings clearly and with appropriate preparation.
The Altar and the Liturgy
Altar servers assist at the altar and carry out the tasks that support the proper order of the liturgical celebration.
Prayer Together
Parish life is nourished by more than the celebration of Holy Mass. Praying together is one of the ways in which the faithful remain connected to one another and to God. The Rosary Society is one expression of this shared life of prayer. Gathering to pray the Rosary gives parishioners an opportunity to pray together, meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life, and seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Devotion to Mary
In the Rosary, the faithful contemplate the events of Christ’s life with Mary and ask for her intercession. The prayer therefore combines reflection centred on Christ with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Praying as a Community
Praying the Rosary together is more than simply reciting individual prayers side by side. Those who gather regularly for communal prayer form a community in which prayer also becomes a way of supporting and carrying one another.
Our Community in Parish Life
Lectors, altar servers, and the Rosary Society are not three separate groups operating independently of one another. Each contributes to a different aspect of life within the parish community.
Liturgical service, assisting at the altar, and praying together all reveal that a parish is more than a place where the church building and Holy Mass are found. It is a community in which the faithful serve one another in different ways.

Growing Together as a Community
Every form of service has its place in parish life. Serving at Holy Mass, praying together, and taking part in parish activities strengthen one another and contribute to the life of the community.
Serving alongside one another also gives parishioners an opportunity to get to know each other better, work together, and share responsibility for the life of the parish.
Take Part in Parish Life
A parish community is built by people who are present, pray, serve, and care for one another. Lectors, altar servers, and the Rosary Society each offer a different way to become involved in parish life.

The Strength of Community Through Service
A parish community is held together not only by the time people share, but also by the ways in which the faithful serve one another. Proclaiming a passage from Scripture, serving at the altar, or praying the Rosary together are all expressions of the life of the community.
In St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Parish, these forms of service each have their place and contribute to the liturgical and spiritual life of the parish. The three groups are also presented separately in the parish’s current website content.
